Providing accessible safety information for students, families and passengers.
SafeStops Australia is a youth-led public transport safety initiative built around a simple idea: everyone deserves to feel safe when travelling.
SafeStops Australia works to improve awareness and understanding of public transport safety, with a particular focus on bus stops and the everyday experiences of students and passengers.
We believe that safer journeys begin before passengers even step onto a bus. The way people wait, board, leave vehicles and interact with their surroundings all plays a part.
Through education, community awareness and advocacy, we want to encourage safer behaviour and more respectful transport environments.
Bus stops are part of everyday life for thousands of Australians. Yet the safety of these spaces can often be overlooked.
Crowding, pushing, unsafe waiting areas and a lack of awareness around moving vehicles can create situations that put passengers at risk. Even seemingly minor behaviours can have serious consequences.
For young students who rely on school buses, these environments are particularly important. A safe and orderly bus stop can make a real difference to the start and end of their day.
We want safety to become something passengers, schools, families, drivers and communities actively think about.
SafeStops Australia began with a conversation about behaviour around school buses.
"I've watched students push and shove their way onto the bus, not even letting people off first. It's dangerous, it's rude, and it needs to stop. I really hope the principal sees this and takes action."
This observation from a teacher at our local school highlighted something that was happening regularly, but wasn't receiving much attention.
It prompted a simple question: Why aren't we doing something about this?
That question became the starting point for SafeStops Australia. What began as an effort to improve behaviour and awareness around school bus stops has grown into a wider initiative focused on public transport safety, community education and advocacy.
Our work focuses on practical ways to make transport safety easier to understand and encourage people to take an active role.
Providing accessible safety information for students, families and passengers.

SafeStops Australia is supported by a small team with a shared interest in improving public transport safety.
SafeStops Australia was recognised in the 2025 Premier's Coding Challenge. It was an important milestone for the initiative and the work behind it.
